Although cicadas spend most of their lives underground, they tend to emerge when the soil reaches about 64 degrees Fahrenheit and typically at sunset - hence the name and color of these earrings.
I call this a rebirth because cicadas are now entering an entirely new cycle in their lives from living underground to above, transitioning from nymphs to insects. It is no doubt the reason why in Chinese tradition they symbolize rebirth and immortality.
This is evident in mythology worldwide. In Greek mythology, the goddess Eos asked Zeus to make her lover immortal. Zeus granted her request, but she never asked for him to remain ageless so he did grow old. He grew tiny and shriveled and entered a new cycle in his life as the first cicada. In Filipino lore, the goddess of dusk is said to be accompanied by cicadas wherever she appears.
No matter the legend or tale, these earrings should serve as a reminder that we also go through cycles in our own lives and just like the sun sets, it will rise again.
