Although bats are typically nocturnal mammals, there is an exception to the rule. There are very few species of bats that are seen flying during the daytime, one of which is Blyth's horseshoe bat - the namesake of these earrings.
Native to India and the Malay Peninsula, these bats can be seen flying regularly under the light of the sun. Which is why, when I made these earrings, I wanted those little guys to have a golden glow that can be seen when the light hits it.
Typically bats fly during the night to avoid predators, but this species (particularly in remote islands) doesn't have to worry about that. You see, on these islands, competitors and predators of bats are not as prevalent allowing these bats to roam freely. Additionally, insects are many times more populous during the daytime hours - an all you can eat buffet for these babies!
May your days be as carefree and abundant as it is for the Blyth's horseshoe bat!
